With great sorrow, IRENA’s announces the death of Dr. Hermann Scheer on October 14th.
Born in April 1944, Hermann Scheer had been a member of the German parliament since 1980. President of the European Association for Renewable Energy (Eurosolar), Dr. Scheer was also General Chairman of the World Council for Renewable Energy. In 1999, he was awarded the Alternative Nobel Prize – The Right Livelihood Award – for his "indefatigable work for the promotion of solar energy worldwide". In 2002, Time Magazine recognized him as one of five "Heroes for the Green Century."

We mourn the death of Hermann Scheer, a remarkable man and politician. Hermann Scheer, President of EUROSOLAR, the European Association for Renewable Energy, General Chairman of the World Council for Renewable Energy (WCRE), Holder of the Alternative Nobel Prize and Member of the German Parliament, died in Berlin on 14 October, aged 66. All of us are deeply shaken by his sudden death.

As of today, IRENA’s statute enters into force. The International Renewable Energy Agency becomes a fully fledged International Organization.

One year ago, Abu Dhabi was elected as headquarters of IRENA and Hélène Pelosse was elected as Interim Director-General. In this first year, much has been achieved for the International Renewable Energy Agency.

The International Renewable Energy Agency one year on

IRENA turned out to be a success many had not believed in. At EUROSOLAR we were convinced from the very beginning that it was right to take this road. Our tenacity was rewarded: We came a long way but finally achieved our target.
